a story inspired by ecofeminism that I styled, shot by Tara Darby (Amelia's magazine - issue 9).

The word ecofeminism was coined in the early 70s, stemming from the idea of a parallel between the oppression of women within the domestic sphere and environmentalism. Ecofeminists believe that patriarchy is the root cause of problems such as racism, sexism etc. and its impulse to conquer and control nature the cause for environmental issues. But ecofeminists unlike feminists, don't strive for equality between men and women, they instead seek a 'liberation' of women through the recognition of their values and activities within the domestic context. Similarly, ecofeminists are opposed to the western capitalist idea that unless used for monetary resources, nature is deemed 'not productive'.

If eco-fashion encompasses respect for nature and human rights, ecofeminist fashion, if there is such a thing, also places value on the crafts that have been associated with women for centuries. This hands-on approach favors an 'organic' development of the garment that is in tune with the spiritual and the instinctive, which in the dualistic patriarchal ideology, are thought to be female qualities.
