aparigraha is the concept of non-attachment to material things in sanskrit and is one of the yamas in the yoga sutra of patanjali. in my head there is a constant debate as to whether I should continue with my fashion career: do I want to perpetuate consumerism? do I want to own new garments each season? do I need the stuff? the answer is always NO.
but then I discover women that like me are inspired by ethical clothing (for me ethical means conscientious but also challenging preconceived ideas as to what fashion is about) and make beautiful things with their hands and I'm inspired again and I realize that it all is the way it's meant to be.

H A N N A L E E N A

I discovered hannalena a couple of winters ago browsing myspace. I saw a picture of a woman on a dark horse and I expected to find an esoteric folk band, like vinter or fursaxa, as I was listening to a lot of that stuff at the time.
instead I found pictures of oil paintings depicting eerie creatures - half human half animal - covered with tattoos.
I love hannaleena's work for many reasons,
her decorations make me think of tattoo art as a ritualistic action, and they evoked the idea of tattoo used as a talisman - which is a concept dear to me. (more about this soon)
